Dr. Kachikwu, who spoke as a guest on BBC Hard Talk in London on Monday, also stated that he recently signed an agreement with oil giant, Agip, for the firm to build a refinery in Nigeria.

When asked to state the year that Nigeria would be self-sufficient in refining petroleum products, Kachikwu replied, “I have said 2019, and that is the target that I gave.”

On whether he would leave office if he failed to achieve the target, the minister replied, “Yes, of course. That is the reason why you are in government.”

Abolish 36 States, Adopt 6 Geo-political Zones As Federating Units – Atiku

Image
Former Vice President and a chieftain of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has suggested the use of the nation’s six geo-political zones as federating units rather than the current 36-state structure, many of which he declared unviable.

“We must be open to changing the nature of the federating units, such as using the existing geo-political zones as federating units rather than the current 36 states, of which only a few are financially viable,” he said.

Atiku spoke in Lagos on Sunday while accepting the Hero of Nigeria Democracy Award conferred on him by Hall of Grace Magazine.

In a paper entitled, "Building a nation that works: My Diary and Way Forward", the former vice president, however, added that political decentralization must be accompanied by economic diversification.

He said: “We need to diversify our economy away from the dependence on oil. We need to create opportunities for our people to engage in diverse economic activities which governments w…

"Buhari Is Doing Well, He Will Win Presidential Election Again"; says Garba Shehu

Image
The Presidency on Tuesday said if another presidential election were to be held today, President Muhammadu Buhari would still win like he did in 2015.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this while addressing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was joined by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Femi Adesina; and the SSA on Media and Publicity to the Acting President, Laolu Akande.

Shehu said Nigerians were happy with Buhari and would still vote for him despite whatever the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) and other opposition parties might be saying.

He said the confidence reposed in Buhari by ordinary Nigerians had remained unshaken because the President, according to him, is doing what Nigerians want.
