JAMB: Cut-Off Marks Reduced To Stop Nigerians From Going To School Abroad.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said the cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions were reduced to encourage as many Nigerians as possible to school at home.

JAMB said rather than have a situation where Nigerians enrol in “mushroom universities” and “glorified secondary schools” in Ghana, Uganda and Gambia, the board decided to take the heavily-criticised course of action.

The examination body said “tertiary institutions hardly fill their available spaces”, and that the need to go abroad is not caused by a “shortage of spaces or standards” but “partly” due to unrealistic benchmarks.

According to JAMB, the worst admitted cut-off mark in a Nigerian institution is “far better than allowing them to fly out to some of the institutions they are attending”.

JAMB reiterated that the decision was collectively made by vice chancellors of tertiary institutions, and as such, none can reject it.

Fani-Kayode Calls Governor Okorocha One Legged Ritualist.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has accused Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, of being behind the deaths recorded on Saturday at the popular Eke-Ukwu market in Owerri, the state capital.

In a series of tweets, Fani-Kayode rained abuses on Okorocha and insisted that it was not hate speech, when some of his followers labelled his posts as such.

He tweeted: “When will this pot-bellied illiterate, this filthy sodomite, this one-legged ritualist and this ravenous beast stop killing people in Imo?

“Calling a mass murderer a mass murderer,a racist a racist,a bigot a bigot,a monster a monster and a tyrant a tyrant is NOT hate speech.

“It is called speaking truth to power and it is the life-blood of democracy. Anyone that thinks otherwise needs to go back to school.”

The incidence which recorded the death of a 10-year-old boy and two others, has been roundly condemned after a video of the shooting emerged online.

The Health Benefits Of Taking Folic Acid

In a recommendation that reaffirms previous guidelines, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said that folic acid supplements reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

As it advised in 2009, the independent panel of experts said women who are pregnant or able to get pregnant should take a daily supplement that contains between 400 and 800 micrograms of folic acid to prevent these potentially fatal birth defects.

Neural tube defects occur when the brain or spinal cord do not develop properly, leading to serious disabilities or even death. These birth defects take place very early in pregnancy. Sometimes they occur even before a woman knows that she is expecting, the task force explained.

Folic acid supplements are most beneficial if women take them one month before becoming pregnant and continue taking them for the first three months of pregnancy, the panel concluded.

Folic acid is a naturally occurring B vitamin found in many fruits and vegetables, such as leafy greens, broccoli and oran…
