SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY NYESOM EZENWO WIKE CON, GSSRS, GOVERNOR OF RIVERS STATE AT THE CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE 57TH YEAR OF NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE AT THE SHARKS STADIUM, PORT HARCOURT ON SUNDAY 1ST OCTOBER 2017.
I greet you all on this Independence Day.

2. Today, we join the rest of our fellow citizens both within and outside the country to celebrate the 57th independence anniversary of our country, Nigeria.

3. 57 years ago, on the 1st of October 1960, we became a free sovereign nation with full responsibility for our destiny as a nation and as a people. After 57 years, we have every reason to celebrate this day because independence was the culmination of the dreams and struggles of our founding fathers for us to forever be in complete control of our affairs as a free, unfettered people.

President Buhari Administration Releases 57 Achievements At Independence Celebration.

The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has released a list of 57 achievements made since it resumed office in 2015.

Bashir Ahmad, the Personal Assistant to President Buhari on New Media, in a Facebook post, released the list of 57.

The list, categorized into security & related matters, economy, anti-graft war, and others, included the release of 106 Chibok girls from the captivity of Islamic Sect Boko Haram, the recovery of stolen funds, the eradication of polio in the country, and the take off of the 2nd Niger Bridge.

In The Spirit Of Independence, Gov. Ajimobi Released 21 Convicts.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State said on Saturday that he has granted reprieve to 21 convicts in the exercise of his prerogative powers of mercy.

Ajimobi noted that this action was in pursuant to the provisions of section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He said it was done in commemoration of the 57th Independence Day Celebration.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr. Seun Abimbola who said this in a statement made available by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Mr. Toye Arulogun explained that seven persons were granted release from prison having spent varying terms of their sentences, While 13 convicts had their life sentences reduced to a term of years, having spent considerable terms in prison, while one person had his death sentence commuted to a life sentence.
