Rivers State Government Shuts Down 40 Private Schools.
The state’s Ministry of Education had, based on an order by Governor Nyesom Wike, moved to seal off schools that do not have approval to operate.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wik A special taskforce constituted by the Education Mnistry had, Monday, upon resumption of academic activities stormed erring institutions in Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas of the state and obstructed activities, leaving pupils and students stranded.
The affected private schools are Heroes Queens Classic Academy; INEBEN International School; BUFEM Nursery, Primary and Secondary School; Success Academy; Royal Grace Academy; De Excellent Schools; LADEV Nursery, Primary and Secondary School; Classic Crown International Schools; Christ the Redeemer Academy, all located in the Port Harcourt township, among others.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dagogo Hart, who spoke after the exercise, warned that any proprietor that reopens without the approval of the government will be punished appropriately.
Hart said: “Governor Wike, had approved the closure of 1886 private schools across the state, which came into effect on September 1, 2017and as a follow up, we had to go out in a four-team to implement the directive. The reason for the checks in schools is to monitor compliance in terms of resumption because the governor also approved a uniform calendar for private and public schools.
“We wonder if the state government had given a specific date for school resumption, we see no reason why any school should resume a week before the resumption day. So in all we closed about 40 illegal schools today and as far as Ministry of Education is concern, they remain closed.”
