Nigeria will disintegrate if Morocco Joins ECOWAS.

Nigeria, ECOWAS and the Morocco question by Reuben Abati
I was in Morocco recently, about 20 years after I last visited Timbuktu, Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Laayoune. I was quite impressed to see how Morocco with its colour-coded cities remains very much an organized, efficient and a comparatively competitive country. The trip this time began from the Lagos airport aboard the Royal Air Maroc, which now plies the Lagos-Casablanca route. Twenty years earlier, I had to go first to Paris, France, change from one airport to the other, before boarding another flight to Morocco.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI
This crisis of transportation, having to go to Europe before accessing African countries, poses a major threat to trade, co-operation and integration among African countries. This time around, Lagos to Casablanca took no more than 4 hours. The flight was full; the passengers were mostly Nigerians. I would later discover that these passengers were not necessarily going to Morocco to atte…

Workers to get salary before Easter as FG, States, LGAs share N647.39bn.

Image
Workers in Federal, States and Local Government establishments are to receive their salaries before Easter as the three tiers of government have shared N647.39 billion being March allocation from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

The figure is N11.836 billion higher than the N635.554 billion shared in the previous month.

The released subvention followed the intervention of the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who resolved a logjam Wednesday morning that sprang from states’ rejection of the N74 billion presented at this month’s FAAC meeting by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as its revenue for February.

The Tuesday meeting had been deadlocked, throwing workers into panic.

However, at the reconvened FAAC meeting chaired by Adeosun on Wednesday in Abuja, it was agreed that N647.39 billion be approved while efforts will be to recover the NNPC’s shortfall and have the account properly reconciled.

Statutory revenue accounted for N557.943 billion of the total…

Federal High Court Overruled The Federal Government On The Matter Of Nnamdi Kanu.

Image
In a ruling in Abuja on March 28, 2018, a federal high court overruled the federal government on the matter of Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafran leader who has been missing since September, 2017 when the Nigerian army carried out lethal operations at his home at Umuahia in Abia State.

Since Kanu’s trial resumed in October last year after the military attack, Kanu has neither be seen nor heard from.

Relying on army’s denials of holding Kanu, the federal government has since then claimed that his nonappearance at his trial was enough to revoke his bail and compel his three sureties to forfeit their bonds.

Conversely, the lawyers to the sureties had consistently advanced the argument that the issue of the military invasion had to be considered first before the issue of breach of bond or Kanu’s trial can ever arise. But till this last hearing, counsels have never had sufficient opportunity to fully present their arguments.

On February 20, 2018 when the matter came up for further mention, Justice Binta…
